An escapee from the Washington Parish Jail was captured less than 45 minutes after he bolted from custody at the Riverside Medical Center in Franklinton, according to Chief Deputy Scott Blair of the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Blair said James David Jenkins, 30, was captured in the woods behind the medical center at approximately 7 p.m., not long after he overpowered a guard. Jenkins, initially booked July 8 on charges of manufacture and possession of a Schedule 2 narcotic, had been transported to Riverside on Saturday after showing signs of having a seizure and convulsions.

“We thought he was going through detox for drugs so we took him to the hospital,” said Blair, adding that Jenkins had showed no signs of ill health before Saturday.

Blair said Jenkins allegedly overpowered the guard while Jenkins went to use the rest room.

“We had (tracking) dogs from the Franklinton Police Department and the Rayburn Correctional Center and help from the Washington Parish Drug Task Force,” Blair said. “They were all there within five minutes.

“They surrounded the perimeter and worked their back. They located him fairly easy.”

Blair said Jenkins faces the added charge of escape.
